About Riverable Ireland
Riverable Ireland was created to empower paddlers, whitewater kayakers, canoeists, wild salmon and brown trout anglers, and wild river swimmers across Ireland's 26 counties and 4 provinces (Munster, Connacht, Leinster, and Ulster). We provide the essential outdoor answer: "Is the river safe to paddle, fish, or swim today, or is it in spate?"
Our Open Hydrology Data Stack
We ingest and synthesize observational data from authoritative open scientific and governmental bodies:
- The Office of Public Works (OPW): Real-time hydrometric telemetry from over 450 monitoring stations reporting water level stage (metres) every 15 minutes via waterlevel.ie.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA Ireland): Water quality, catchment monitoring, and ecological flow benchmarks under HydroNet.
- Open-Meteo Global Flood & GloFAS API: Continuous discharge rate modeling (cumecs, m³/s), 7-day river flow forecast curves, and high-resolution atmospheric models.
- OpenStreetMap & Ordnance Survey Ireland Data: Public boat slips, canoe steps, kayak put-ins, take-outs, and riverside Blueway trailheads.
- RainViewer Doppler Radar: Real-time high-resolution radar precipitation overlays for tracking incoming Atlantic rain fronts.
Provisional Telemetry & River Safety
Real-time telemetry published by OPW and EPA monitoring networks is provisional and subject to calibration and quality control. Ireland's western mountain catchments are rapid-response spate rivers where water levels can rise 2 to 3 metres during heavy Atlantic depressions in a matter of hours.
Always check official OPW flood alerts, scout low-head river weirs before attempting to paddle them, inspect for submerged strainers, dress for cool water temperatures, and wear certified lifejackets / buoyancy aids.
